My interest in teaching in a formal setting developed when I took a course called "Teaching and Learning in Ag," which served as a well-rounded introduction to all things teaching: types of assessment, lesson planning, teaching philosophies, effective lecturing, and syllabus development. This foundation helped me to create and deliver my own units of instruction to multiple undergraduate courses, and inspired me to teach my own course prior to leaving graduate school.
In spring 2024, I co-instructed a course of 70 students called "Plagues through the Ages" with Dr. Hannah Tiffin, a postdoctoral researcher in the Veterinary Entomology Lab. This course, a general education credit for undergraduates, served as an interdisciplinary combination of science and history. We used a combination of lecture, discussion, and online teaching tools to teach our students about common diseases that impacted our modern world, and to help them develop critical thinking, writing, and public speaking skills. We encouraged creativity in their final project by giving them broad guidelines and allowing them to select their own project topic and medium.
